Hatton National Bank (HNB) emerged winner in the Large Scale Category at ACCA Sustainability Reporting Awards 2009, organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. HNB Assurance emerged winners in the Small Scale Category.
The aim of the ACCA Awards is to identify and reward innovative attempts to communicate corporate performance and transparency in reporting. At the core of the judging criteria are the 3Cs – Completeness, Credibility and Communication covering aspects such as environmental objectives, compliance/ non-compliance records, management commitment, contingency planning, risk management, stakeholder engagement and external assurance.
Rajendra Theagarajah, Managing Director/CEO of HNB said, “we are deeply honoured by this recognition for it emphasises the importance of integration of sustainable practices for long-term business development. It reflects our commitment to maintain best practices and transparent reporting and encourages us to constantly improve our standards. We are particularly delighted to also note that our own group subsidiary HNB Assurance PLC has received similar recognition in the small scale category”.
Among other companies receiving awards at the event were DIMO, who emerged winners in the medium Category, while Chemanex and Union Assurance were the runners up in the small and medium categories respectively. The large category saw Ceylon Tobacco Company and John Keells Holdings adjudged as joint runners up.
According to the Judges’ Report, HNB had a detailed coverage of its impacts and commitment of top management to deal with such impacts. The sustainability reporting approach clearly indicates strategy and implementation through a credible process.
The panel of judges comprised Dr Uditha Liyanage, Director, PIM, Chandra Jayaratne, former chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Prema Cooray, Chairman of CCC Solutions.
