Sri Lanka Telecom partnered with Asia Foundation, a leading non-profit organisation to provide an island wide book donation program through the foundation’s ‘Books for Asia,’ program.
With the objective of ‘making reading a habit,’ SLT and the Asia Foundation created a pilot program entitled, ‘Spreading the Wealth of Knowledge,’- a part of the foundation’s ongoing ‘Books for Asia’ initiative. A collaborative effort, the project is aimed at the development of children’s, adult and professional education in Sri Lanka, with the provision of educational material. The contribution was made to foster a stronger culture of reading among schoolchildren, undergraduates, parents and the general public.
The development of the country requires a major investment in access to information, education and English language skills.
As many as 100,000 books have been donated annually in collaboration with SLT in 2004 and 2005, and this number is expected to be repeated this year as well, due to the efforts of the program.
SLT as a socially responsible company, is committed to addressing the needs of primary and secondary education through this program. Through the provision of books and other educational material to schools, libraries and other learning academies, SLT helps and encourages students to improve their literary skills. This program also helps educators and schoolteachers improve vocational and research skills.
