China donates shelter material for IDPs
The Sichuan Province of China handed over 2000 sets of temporary shelter material to the Government of Sri Lanka in order to meet the needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North.
The total cost of the shelter material was around Rs 128 million.
Senior Advisor to the President Basil Rajapaksa MP and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for Resettlement, Development and Security in the Northern Province, accepted the shelter material which was handed over by Zhang Zuoha, Vice Governor of Sichuan Province.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony, Basil Rajapaksa thanked the Government of China for their continuous support to Sri Lanka.
Yang Xiuping, Ambassador of China, U L M Haldeen, Secretary, Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services, S B Divaratne, Secretary to the Presidential Task Force for Resettlement, Development and Security in the Northern Province and officials of the Presidential Secretariat were present at the ceremony.
Purchase of equipment from China for development activities in North
Under the direction of Senior Advisor to the President Basil Rajapaksa MP and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for Resettlement, Development and Security in the Northern Province, machinery and equipment were purchased from China for development work under the Uthuru Wasanthaya programme.
The equipment includes 46 backhoe loaders, four cargo trucks with loading crane, 12 farm tractors with broom attachment, nine bitumen sprayers, a decanting plant, two chip sealers and nine bitumen bowsers with heating arrangement. The total cost of the equipment was Rs 2,353 million.
The machinery and the equipment will be used to carry out development work such as road construction and reconstruction of bridges and waterways.
