Bank of Ceylon (BOC) has launched Sri Lanka’s first biodegradable banking card as part of its 86th anniversary celebrations. Made from corn-based PLA (Polylactic Acid), this eco-friendly alternative to traditional PVC cards addresses the significant plastic waste challenge associated with millions of cards issued annually. “This is more than just a card—it’s a statement of our values,” said Surekha Kulasekera, AGM (Sustainable Banking). BOC collaborates with Thales and Mastercard to ensure the card not only supports the planet but also offers global payment options. Aligning with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, BOC’s initiative represents a commitment to sustainability as part of its broader strategy, which includes investments in green technologies and digital solutions.
The biodegradable card will be phased in for new issuances and renewals, maintaining the security and functionality of traditional cards. “Every time a customer uses this card, they are part of a larger movement towards a greener future,” Kulasekera emphasized. BOC aims to set a standard for sustainable innovations in Sri Lanka and South Asia, with the biodegradable card being just the beginning.
