Bank of Ceylon has donated 300 computers to the University of Peradeniya to support the restoration of facilities damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka during the late 2025. The university suffered significant damage to several facilities, and the donation is intended to aid its ongoing recovery while strengthening teaching, learning, and administrative functions. The donation ceremony was attended by Prof Terrence Madhujith, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya; Priyal Silva, Deputy General Manager (Branch Operations), BOC; Buddhika Premarathna and Damith Ekanayake, Assistant General Managers; and B.G. Jayarathne. Students and academic and non-academic staff were also present. Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread destruction across multiple provinces, disrupting housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods, and affecting over one million people. In response, BOC launched several relief initiatives to support affected communities. The bank distributed dry rations and essential goods valued at 50 million rupees and contributed 500 million rupees to the Government’s “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” fund. BOC also facilitated overseas contributions through its Internet Payment Gateway (IPG), enabling donations from various countries. Its UK subsidiary and branches in Chennai and the Maldives supported efforts to mobilize international assistance, working with foreign high commissions. Priyal Silva stated that as Sri Lanka’s leading bank, BOC remains committed to fulfilling its corporate responsibility, especially during national crises. He noted that the computer donation reflects the bank’s continued support for both affected communities and the country’s education sector as institutions recover from the disaster.
