Sri Lanka’s vehicle insurance industry has taken a major step toward digital transformation with the launch of a nationwide digital insurance verification platform, eliminating the long-standing requirement for motorists to carry a physical insurance certificate.
Motorists have been able to verify the validity of their vehicle insurance by dialing *1338# from any mobile phone or by sending an SMS with the vehicle registration number. The service enables users to instantly access insurance information anytime and anywhere, offering greater convenience while removing the need to carry or safeguard a plastic insurance card. The platform was designed and developed by HUTCH Enterprise in collaboration with the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL), all general insurance companies, telecommunications operators, and technology partners. The initiative is expected to improve national productivity by reducing administrative processes, minimizing commuter inconvenience, enhancing accessibility, and supporting environmental sustainability through the elimination of plastic insurance cards.
The digital solution enables real-time verification of vehicle insurance information for motorists, law enforcement authorities, and other authorized users across all mobile networks. By providing instant access to insurance status, the platform strengthens regulatory compliance, supports road safety initiatives, accelerates verification processes, and helps reduce insurance-related fraud and misuse.
As the technology partner behind the nationwide insurance verification ecosystem, HUTCH Enterprise continues to drive Sri Lanka’s digital transformation through scalable enterprise solutions. The initiative reinforces HUTCH’s commitment to supporting the country’s vision of building a USD 15 billion digital economy by 2030 through innovative, accessible, and efficient digital services.
