Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) sponsored the 36th Junior National Badminton Championships for the second consecutive year. This sponsorship was part of its commitment to empower Sri Lankan sports and SLT has been the driving force behind several major sporting events in Sri Lanka over the last several years.
Organized by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), the tournament is the highlighted event in the calendar for junior shuttlers, with over 2000 participants in all categories.
“SLT has been continuously supporting the SLBA, sponsoring key events throughout the tournament. We are extremely grateful for their support for this endeavor, as it goes a long way in the development of the future talent of athletes,” said Christo Gonawela, Secretary, SLBA.
The tournament was held at St Thomas’ College, Mt Lavinia, Royal College Sports Complex and the SLBA Headquarters, Colombo 7. The finals and the awards ceremony were held at the Royal College Sports Complex. The tournament was conducted in the categories of under 11 boys singles and under 13, 15, 17 and 19 – singles and doubles as well as under 11 girls singles and under 13, 15, 17 and 19 – singles and doubles.
“Sports have played an important social and cultural role in Sri Lanka bringing together individuals and communities, as well as crossing social boundaries. We are mindful of our role in supporting talent from rural Sri Lanka to develop themselves as well as making a mark on the international scene. We see our partnership as something that helps to reinforce our commitment to lead the nation,” Laxman Joseph, Chief Administrative Officer, SLT stated.
