An event was organized to signify the inauguration of the Model Village to be built with Indian assistance under the Model Villages Program of the Ministry of Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs – Ranidugama in Gampaha District.
Sajith Premadasa, Minister of Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Former President of Sri Lanka along with Dr Shilpak Ambule, Acting High Commissioner of India jointly inaugurated the village and handed over the houses. Several Members of the Parliament, as well as leaders from the Western Province, senior Government officials and a large number of people from the region attended the ceremony.
The Government of India has partnered with the Ministry of Housing and Construction and Cultural Affairs to build 100 model villages consisting of a total of 2,400 houses across the country under Indian grant assistance of 1200 million rupees.
These 2,400 houses are in addition to the 60,000 houses built under the Indian Housing Project for war affected people in the North and the East and the estate workers in the planttion areas of the island.
