Sri Dalada Maligawa and People’s Bank launched the ‘Sisu Diriyata Bodu Saviyak’ program during the Central Province Scholarship Award Ceremony at the Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy Centre.
This initiative aims to support talented but economically disadvantaged children in their education.
At the event, scholarships were awarded to students who passed the 2023 Grade five Scholarship Examination, covering their education up to Grade 11 starting in 2024.
The program plans to provide scholarships to about 2,000 children from low-income families across 16 districts, with a monthly scholarship of 1,500 rupees for six years, totaling 108,000 rupees per student.
In the first year, 36 million rupees will be allocated for scholarships, amounting to an estimated 216 million rupees over six years. This initiative marks a significant financial commitment to support education in Sri Lanka.
The Anunayake Thera of the Asgiri Chapter, Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera of the historic Athkanda Raja Maha Viharaya, Nayake of the inner shrine room Ven. Urulewatte Dhammarakkitha Thera who is also the Incumbent of the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya, as well as other other monks, Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa Pradeep Nilanga Dela, Basnayake Nilames of the Sri Maha Naatha and Paththini Devalayas, Prof. Narada Fernando, Chairman, People’s Bank; Clive Fonseka, CEO/GM; Naleen Pathiranage, Deputy General Manager (Channel Management); Manjula Dissanayake, Deputy General Manager (Human Resources); senior officers, District Secretaries of Kandy and Matale, Divisional Secretaries, parents as well as a large number of scholarship recipient students participated in the event.
