Walter Mackenzie assumed duty as Managing Director of Mobitel from June 1, 1996. Mackenzie, an Indian born telecom expert replaces the first Managing Director Vijay Watson who returns to the parent company in Australia. A MBA degree holder from Macqnaire University in Sydney, Mackenzie is also qualified in science and computer technology. Prior to his arrival in Sri Lanka, Mackenzie was a consultant to major corporate and government customers on the development of strategic telecommunication plan. His work also involved the establishment of a systems integration business for Telstra (parent company of Mobitel) and the development of Telstra’s calling and smart cards strategy. Accepting his new appointment Mackenzie plans to further develop the Mobitel in the country. He believes that the growth of business is very important to steer the company to even greater heights.
