Indian exports to Sri Lanka will see an upswing with the Sri Lankan government taking an active participation in the trade be- tween the two SAARC countries. The optimism is believed to have stemmed from the fact that the exports to Sri Lanka have remained more or less stagnant during 1996-97 despite a general gloom prevailing in other export markets. The council general at the Sri Lankan Consulate, S Ugadera, is going to meet various exporters in an earnest attempt to promote Indian imports to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is one country to which Indian exports have remained steady over the last year. From Indian Rs 1343.78 crore in 1995-96 to Rs 1668.26 cr in 1996- 97, the exports have shown an impressive increase. Imports, showed an increase from Rs 138.32 cr last year to 189.06 cr
