Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa, met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon recently. He briefed the Secretary General on humanitarian measures taken by the Government and specific measures taken to protect civilians in the face of continued defiance by the LTTE towards calls by the Government and the Untied Nations to allow the people to move into the cleared areas. The LTTE defiance is a matter of concern to the Government. He also reiterated President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s commitment to pursue the political process through a democratic electoral means. He discussed UN assistance in the post-conflict period for de-mining and socio economic development. The Secretary General shared concerns over civilians and expressed appreciation for the Government’s cooperation. He assured UN support for civilian protection, humanitarian work and post-conflict development.
