Randika Cooray was the first athlete to represent Sri Lanka at the Fifth World Dwarf Games, held in Belfast Ireland. She won the Bronze medal in the women’s 100m event bringing glory and honour to Sri Lanka. She also participated in the 60m event, Basketball, Badminton and Football alongside 200 participants from 15 countries. Randika represented the United Kingdom in the team events as she was the only Sri Lankan at the Games. She has also won several awards at the Four Nations Disabled Badminton Championships held in Liverpool in February 2009, and the National Dwarf Games held in Birmingham in May 2009.
Randika said she is delighted to have represented Sri Lanka and to have won a medal at the Dwarf Games, a dream she thought would never come true. She says, “I like to be a part of an awareness movement to establish special needs in Sri Lanka and to let people know that a limitation cannot keep us from achieving what we want. I want them to know that an ‘impossible dream’ is possible if we have the heart and a will that can surmount what is perceived unattainable.”
