As part of its 150th Anniversary celebrations, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) held a cultural evening at the Town Hall in Colombo under the patronage of Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said, “the CMC is not just the first municipal council of South Asia, but it is also the cradle of our political arena. Sri Lanka’s movement for freedom began with the middle class, lawyers, merchants and corporates of Colombo.” He added that everyone must strive to help make Colombo the trading capital of the Indian Ocean.
“We have a dynamic vision for the city’s prosperity for the years ahead and pledge to fulfil that vision with the support of all our stakeholders”, elaborated A J M Muzammil, Mayor of Colombo.
One of the oldest municipal councils in South and South-East Asia, the CMC has a long and glorious history of improving urban facilities and ensuring steady provision of municipal services through the city’s constant expansion over the years.
