New inventions a true sign of development is duly encouraged towards the country in its vision to become the ‘Wonder of Asia’. ‘Sahasak Nimavum’ 2012, exhibition was one such endeavour to throw light on the talents of capable Sri Lankans who help take the country forward.
The ‘Sahasak Nimavum’ exhibition was the first of its kind organised to showcase inventions by Sri Lankans based on a concept by the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission under the Ministry of Research and Technology.
Applications were called for participants from four categories that included the Open University and technical colleges, schools as well as the commercial category. All inventions were in turn grouped under 22 technical fields. For instance Class-A was mechanics, engines, machinery, tools, industrial processes and metallurgy.
The first Nano product developed in the country, the Nano Air Purifier Lamp was also an interesting new invention displayed at the exhibition. With nano particles attached to its surface and with a special iron powered with the ability to kill bacteria the lamp will purify the air once switched on and will also prevent odors. The Nano activated water filter was another Nano product to remove harmful chemicals such as Arsenic and Cadmium in the water, especially in the North Western region of Sri Lanka. The new invention has the ability to filter up to 10,000 litres of water at once.
Kangaroo International was another commercial body with a series of life jackets and life saving equipment that they currently supply not only locally but internationally. G M Krishantha who is the creator of these jackets stated that his jackets are now being manufactured in Korea under patent and are provided to the US Army as well as countries around Asia through the United Nations.
E M Wijekoon and V N Amunupura students of the Technical College Kandy exhibited a mechanism to switch an electrical lamp on and off automatically according to a timer enabled system. This lamp timer module provides an accurate means of controlling not only industrial lights and name boards but also lighting within the home through a simple mechanism. Once the required time is set it does not need further attention to switching on and off, which also greatly contributes to energy conservation.
Ganeshwaran Kanageshwaran from Vavuniya who is a student of the University of Moratuwa already has 14 inventions under his name. One of the most impressive at the exhibition was a new and improved wheel chair for differently abled persons. The new wheelchair is uniquely created in order for the user to control it using only the head. Among his other inventions was the 45 degree refrigerator closer that assists in reducing power wastage along with a substitute for styrofoam made out of powdered wood and bonding agents. A foot cleaner that automatically wipes and cleans feet was another interesting invention by Ganeshwaram.
Amila Sampath was another young inventor who had created five unique items for filling stations. The unique fuel pumping unit with a computerised network has the ability to gauge the fuel up to the millilitre and will produce a printed report at the end of the month with all the details. His air pump has the ability to gauge and fill the exact amount of air needed for the tyres.
The enthusiastic innovators included many more young individuals as well as private establishments all determined on contributing to the development of Sri Lanka
