Bukit Darah enters the Business Today TOP TWENTY FIVE at number three. Being a regional group, Bukit Darah has an extensive geographical spread and diverse investments. The group consists of Carson Cumberbatch and Goodhope Asia Holdings, with operations in Sri Lanka and South-East Asia.
The total revenue was 76.1 billion rupees, which was a 15 percent increase from the previous year. However, PAT reduced by 28 percent to record 9.6 billion rupees. The brewery sector saw a 19 percent drop in profit, which could be attributed to the domestic economic conditions that saw two increases in excise duty, increased cost in importation, a weaker rupee and increase in fuel prices. The investment sector contributed 1.5 billion rupees to profits due to timely divestments and the maturing of long term investments. The leisure sector contributed 150.1 million rupees in profit, which was an increase of 21 percent from last year. Though this sector did not perform as strongly as expected. The real estate sector too contributed to consolidated profits, while its full potential will be garnered in the years to come.
Goodhope Asia Holdings, which consists of the group’s integrated palm oil business saw the upstream plantation sector contributing 8.6 billion rupees while the oil and fats sector recorded a loss of 1.5 billion rupees.
Bukit Darah as a group has undergone a year of consolidation, where it has been able to expand its strength through adverse economic conditions, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, specifically in relation to the businesses they are engaged in. Bukit Darah’s exposure within Sri Lanka is limited, and if the group is maintaining a low profile intentionally then this strategy should be revisited as there is much that can be learnt from them as they were the first Sri Lankan company to diversify their business interests abroad.
