Hatton National Bank (HNB) enters at number five in the ranking. HNB continues to be the second largest private commercial bank in Sri Lanka, in terms of size and market capitalisation. Furthermore, HNB was successful in implementing tier II requirements. Focusing on long-term senior debt capital in international markets HNB demonstrated the bank’s capacity for strategic growth, thereby effecting change in the wider financial sector of Sri Lanka.
The group PAT was 8.3 billion rupees. There was an 18 percent growth in total loans and 32 percent growth in net interest income driven by increase in interest rates and portfolio growth. Net NPA decreased to 0.86 percent from 1.06 percent. Furthermore, the bank was able to raise foreign funding to USD 75 million in the form of senior debt and tier II funding.
HNB too, during 2012, focused on ensuring the sustainability of people, environment and national economy while pursuing its business. The Green Branch concept was further expanded to Jaffna building on the lessons learnt from the green operations in Nittambuwa and HNB Towers. In relation to being partners in the development strategy, HNB has strived to be an agent of change in rural and urban under-served communities by creating capacities as well as focusing on economic empowerment. In 2012, HNB disbursed 22 billion rupees worth of SME credit despite high interest rates.
HNB continues to set the bar in the banking sector of Sri Lanka. Ranee Jayamaha, Chairperson, has led the bank to a more equitable organisation, where the benefits have been widespread and shareholders have benefited as well. She has brought greater cohesiveness to the bank.
